      Natureza: Pesquisa

Descrição: The bearded capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) has been documented using hammer stones and anvils to crack open nuts in the wild. Percussive tool-use had previously only been attributed to chimpanzees and humans. As a result, the bearded capuchin monkey has become of particular importance in the paleoarcheological record of early humans (e.g., Roux & Bril, 2005). Although a substantial amount of behavioral data has been collected and analyzed, the landscape and natural habitat of this species remains understudied. In Northeast Brazil, capuchins, and many other wild animals, face rapid loss of their natural habitats due to drought and increase in agriculture, particularly biofuels and soy production. By understanding changes in the biologically diverse Cerrado landscape, we can provide a suitable model of the effects from human activities on the landscape inhabited by capuchin monkeys that will steer future resource management, along with ecological and behavioral studies. The remotely sensed imagery and geospatial analyses we performed were integrated with earlier field work conducted in our study area. Project results and methodologies will provide our partners with accurate, quantitative information that will strengthen their animal behavior research and assist in policy/management decisions for Brazilian ecological forecasting. Utilizing Landsat imagery acquired for 1987, 2000, and 2013 that overlap with the capuchins' home range, vegetation and land use/land cover was characterized. A complete temporal land change analysis allowed the team to assess trends in landuse/land cover and predict the future landscape if no action is taken within the study area. These regional predictions will guide future exploration and lead to further behavioral studies of variability in tool use across geographic areas. It will increase understanding of the impact of land use change and desertification on capuchin monkey habitats, otherwise conducive to percussive tool use behavior. There is a risk that as the Cerrado landscape diminishes, the tool use behavior will cease along with it. This project's findings support efforts to increase ecological management and conservation of this valuable area.

      Natureza: Pesquisa
      Integrantes: PRESOTTO, A. , Wolf, E. , KASZTA, Z. , KERCHOVE, R. V. .
Descrição: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is caused by a highly contagious virus from the family Picornaviridae, which usually affects all cloven-hoofed animals and camelids (Thomson, Bastos 2004). The Southern African Territories type (SAT) viruses are all endemic to African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) of southern Africa (Thomson 1996, Vosloo et al. 2006). It is generally accepted that African buffaloes are the usual source of SAT type FMD outbreaks in livestock in southern Africa and that transmission is the result of close contact between infected buffaloes and susceptible cattle (Condy et al. 1969, Hedger 1972, Brückner et al. 2002; Condy 1979; Gainaru et al. 1986; Thomson et al. 2003; Vosloo et al. 2002; Vosloo et al. 1996). With African buffaloes being reservoirs of the virus, emphasis is often placed on control rather than eradication of the disease (Bastos et al. 2001). In South Africa, FMD control is essentially based on the separation of endemic host species and susceptible livestock (Brückner et al. 2002; Sutmoller 2002; Sutmoller et al. 2000; Thomson et al. 2003; Thomson 2002; Thomson 1996), bi-annual vaccination (Hunter 1998; Thomson 2008), frequent inspection as well as movement control (Rweyemamu et al. 2008b; Vosloo et al. 2002). The Kruger National Park (KNP) and its surroundings are considered an area with a homogenous risk for FMD transmission between buffaloes and cattle. However, stratification of this risk along the wildlife/livestock interface would allow prioritizing areas for vaccination and fence maintenance and, hence optimal mitigation of risk of transmission between buffaloes and cattle and better allocation of resources. In countries that currently lack any control measures and have limited resources, stratification of risk of transmission would also be of great value to identify areas where control is a priority or for delineating disease control zones. In EPISTIS (SR/00/102), several models were developed for this purpose at different scales, using remote sensing and spatial modelling. In GRAZEO, our aim is to explore the potential of the new generation of very-high resolution optical satellite sensors (such as WorldView-2) for (i) mapping vegetation attributes in savanna areas, (ii) deriving grazing suitability indicators and (iii) improving the fine-scale modelling of buffalo-cattle contact risk. The emphasis will be put on the role of the natural vegetation as a key factor of habitat suitability (grazing suitability) for large herbivores.

Seventy-five percent of Africa?s elephants now live in the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA-TFCA) along with three million people. Finding ways to coexist with the elephants is essential to secure the future of Africa's elephants and improve the futures of the people of the region. While the importance of elephants in the ecosystem is acknowledged by all, there are still many questions as to their specific role, with assumptions often taking the place of hard data. For example, loss of biodiversity is the criteria usually used to determine that there are too many elephants in an area. However, in a four-year study in which we directly observed elephant feeding behavior, we found that breeding herds of elephants do little, if any, unsustainable damage to the environment. The long-term goal of our project is to provide scientific and management information that helps humans and elephants coexist in a multi-use landscape. This information will be useful not only in Zimbabwe, but in other areas of abundant elephant populations, like Botswana and South Africa. Thus this study may serve as a model for the whole region.

Descrição: Goal: Brazil is a globally important mangrove holding nation and contains the second most mangrove forest of any nation globally after Indonesia and almost 10 percent of the global mangrove forest area. To put the mangrove holdings of Maranhão into perspective, it contains greater mangrove carbon stocks within its state borders than all nations globally aside from Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua, New Guinea, potentially Australia, Brazil itself. In our area mangroves are being encroached upon by transient dunes, which bury the mangrove forest and cut off the supply of estuarine water. The sand encroachment has progressed to 6 km from the shoreline in this region (Figure 1) and as much as 30 km further north. Aside from its forest importance the mangroves on Maranhão host populations of capuchin monkeys (Sapajus libidinosus), performing a rare form of tool use. Capuchins catch the crabs in the mangroves of Rio Preguicas; they then use wood as harmer and tree trunks as anvils to crack open crabs, a unique opportunity presented by the mangrove habitat where they live. Our main goal is developing a protocol for surveying primates in mangroves using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and thermal cameras. Despite efforts, in the fragmented mangroves of our study area we do not have enough information of bearded capuchin population living in the area, which is imperative to understand if their traditional tool use behavior is endangered.
