Daniel Strum

    • É professor e pesquisador do Departamento de História da Universidade de São Paulo, na área de Brasil Colônia, e membro do Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton). Foi pesquisador visitante na Universidade de Yale e pós-doutorando na Universidade de Stanford. É mestre e doutor em história pela Universidade Hebraica em Jerusalém e graduado em economia pela Universidade de São Paulo. Pesquisa os instrumentos, estratégias e mecanismos ? oficiais e informais ? que promoviam a integração e expansão dos mercados no comércio transatlântico no período colonial e os condicionamentos tecnológicos, políticos, sociais, legais e religiosos a que estava sujeito.

Contou uma equipe de 8 pesquisadores (1 nos Países Baixos, 3 em Portugal e 4 no Brasil), além do autor e coordenador.       Descrição: Colaborador no Projeto de História Espacial que se descreve como: "Our projects operate outside of normal historical practice in five ways: they are collaborative, use visualization, depend on the use of computers, are open-ended, and have a conceptual focus on space. Our lab structure and culture is specifically designed to support the iterative nature of the spatial history research process where new questions and opportunities for further exploration frequently arise. We promote creative thinking and problem solving on the technical, conceptual, and intellectual challenges ? from applying existing technology in new ways to developing custom tools and solutions. Our process begins by outlining initial research goals and objectives, and gathering and digitizing relevant data from archives, libraries, and organizations. We organize our data in geospatial databases to better facilitate the integration of spatial and nonspatial data, and then use visual analysis to help identify patterns and anomalies. Many of our visualizations are experimental and only a few eventually become final products. We embrace visualization as a way not simply to illustrate conclusions, but a means of doing research."

      Descrição: This project analyzes the mechanisms that promoted honesty and diligence in overseas agency relations, and supported the expansion of the early modern sugar trade linking Iberia, Brazil and the Netherlands. Traditional historiography explains governance of long-distance and transnational trade within unidimensional institutional realities. My project instead focuses on the coevolution and interplay of multiple mechanisms (institutions): the legal system, market reputation mechanism and social control. Studying how imperial authorities, local elites, multiethnic mercantile communities and diasporas contributed to this development allows me to explore its social, economic, political and cultural aspects.

      Descrição: A partir da leitura e análise das fontes inquisitoriais, o projeto pretende familiarizar o aluno com as fontes inquisitoriais e capacitá-lo a explorar as diversas possibilidades de pesquisa que seus conteúdos oferecem. Os milhares de processos inquisitoriais apresentam potencial singular ao estudo do controle da consciência e dos movimentos de resistência a ele; da ortodoxia e da fluidez religiosas durante a (Contra-)Reforma Católica; do conceito de ?pureza de sangue? como princípio estruturante da clivagem social ibérica; dos fluxos de diáspora que permeavam o mundo ibérico e os imbricavam social e economicamente a outros impérios; dos hábitos e costumes cotidianos; da sexualidade; e da cultura popular.

      Descrição: O objetivo do projeto é o desenvolvimento de um modelo inteligente de transcrição automática de manuscritos em língua portuguesa para os séculos XVII e XVIII através do programa de aprendizado de máquina Transkribus. Para desenvolver o modelo, pretende-se capacitar estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação, docentes, funcionários técnico-administrativosmembros da comunidade extra-universitária no uso dessa tecnologia de inteligência artificial. Esse modelo poderá progressivamente ser ampliado e aprimorado para outros acervos documentais. O aperfeiçoamento desse modelo depende da cooperação; portanto, o projeto visa fomentar a colaboração entre laboratórios e pesquisadores, e o compartilhamento de informações e conhecimento. Também busca estimular a ciência cidadã, envolvendo a comunidade em geral na atividade de transcrição e correção.

      Descrição: Os livros de contas de mercadores figuram dentre os mais informativos corpi documentais a respeito do comércio transatlântico nos séculos XVI e XVII. A partir de descrições detalhadas dos fluxos náuticos, mercantis e financeiros, esses documentos fornecem informações essenciais à pesquisa das trocas intercontinentais. Escritos por comerciantes em diferentes territórios e momentos, tais registros podem iluminar questões sobre a cultura material, os hábitos de consumo e especialmente sobre a mentalidade mercantil da época, explicitada na mensuração ? e omissão ? dos produtos e seus valores, pesos e qualidades, bem como dos meios de pagamento e dos prazos de entrega e paga. Apesar do enorme potencial que apresentam os livros de receita e despesa ao campo de estudo da História Moderna, grande parte deles nunca foi objeto de análise histórica.
